Understanding the Basics

Who is eligible for Medicare?

Medicare is typically for those 65 years or older, fulfilling citizenship and residency requirements. However, those under 65 may qualify if they have a disability, end-stage renal disease, or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

What are the different parts of Medicare?

Part A covers hospital expenses like inpatient care, hospice care, skilled nursing facility care, and home health care. Part B covers other medical needs like doctor appointments, outpatient care, home health care, medical equipment, preventative care, diagnostic tests (X-rays, CAT scans, MRIs), bloodwork and lab services, and emergency services. Part D helps with the cost of prescription drugs.

Why should I get a Medicare Supplement Plan?

Medicare typically covers about 80% of your medical expenses. A supplement plan is designed to fill in those gaps left behind by Original Medicare. One of the most popular Medigap plans is Aetna Plan G. It provides nationwide coverage you can rely on, and it can reduce your out-of-pocket medical expenses. Read on to learn more about your options.

What Is Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G?

Aetna Medicare Plan G covers the out-of-pocket costs from Original Medicare Parts A and B. In 2026, those insured with Medicare Part A had to meet a deductible of $1736 before benefits would kick in. Multiple benefit periods in the same year could restart the deductible. Plan G covers the entire deductible from Part A.

Part A also required a $434 coinsurance payment per day for hospital stays, which would double if the hospital stay lasted 60 days or more. This payment is fully covered by Aetna Plan G. Part A asked the insured to pay copayments and coinsurance payments for painkillers and other drugs used to control symptoms. Plan G takes over those costs. In Part A, skilled nursing facility stays of 20 days or more incurred a payment of $217 per day. If the visit lasted more than 100 days, enrollees were required to pay for the stay at full cost. Plan G covers these costs in total, making it a reliable senior product plan.

Part B often had beneficiaries acquire additional expenses from coinsurance payments and copayments that usually amount to 20% of the Medicare-approved coverage. Aetna Plan G covers this cost after the annual deductible is met. With Part B, some healthcare providers could charge up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved costs, leading to excess charges for enrollers. Aetna Medicare Plan G provides full coverage for these excess charges.

Additionally, Plan G covers the first three pints of blood used in transfusions. Medicare Part B didn’t start coverage until the fourth pint of blood. Under Original Medicare, emergencies during foreign travel were only covered in rare or limited situations. Aetna Plan G covers 80% of these costs. Aetna Plan G does not cover the annual deductible from Part B, which was $283 in 2026.

  • What is Plan N?

Plan N covers all Medicare-approved services after you pay the annual deductible but includes possible co-payments up to $20 for office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits unless you’re admitted. Plan N may also require you to pay up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount for excess charges.

    What is Plan F?

Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan. It pays for all Medicare-approved services, reducing your out-of-pocket costs to $0. However, Plan F has stricter eligibility requirements than Plan G and Plan N. Only those who were eligible for Medicare Part A before 2020 can enroll in Plan F
