UnitedHealthcare®, in partnership, offers various supplemental health insurance or Medigap plans, including Medigap Plan F. While their AARP Plan F is a popular option among seniors, you may not be eligible for it. Here, we’ll explore the plan’s basics, whether you qualify, and alternative options you might want to consider if you’re not eligible.
What Is UnitedHealthcare® Plan F?
UnitedHealthcare® Plan F is one of UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Supplement insurance plans. It was one of the most sought-after plans for the longest time because it offers superior coverage. The plan covers the following medical expenses:
- Part A deductible
- Part A coinsurance, plus an additional 365 days of coverage after Medicare benefits end
- Part A skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- Part A hospice coinsurance
- Part B deductible
- Part B coinsurance and copayments
- Part B excess charges (the amount a healthcare provider that doesn’t accept Medicare is legally allowed to charge for a medical service)
- First three pints of blood
Besides these benefits, UnitedHealthcare® Plan F also covers 80% of Medicare-approved healthcare services when you’re abroad. As a result of its impressive coverage, Plan F has been the go-to Medigap option for many seniors.
Is UnitedHealthcare® Plan F Still Available?
UnitedHealthcare® Plan F is no longer available to new Medicare enrollees because Medicare Supplement plans can no longer cover the Medicare Part B deductible. This change is part of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015. Lawmakers implemented the change on January 1, 2020.
However, you may still be eligible for UnitedHealthcare® Plan F if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, but hadn’t signed up for a Medigap plan. Additionally, you can retain your plan if you already had UnitedHealthcare® Plan F before the plan’s discontinuation.
Alternative Plans to UnitedHealthcare® Plan F
If you aren’t eligible for UnitedHealthcare® Plan F, don’t worry. You can still purchase UnitedHealthcare® Plan G, which is relatively similar.
UnitedHealthcare® Medicare Supplement Plan G generally offers the same primary benefits as Plan F. However, unlike Plan F, it doesn’t pay for the Medicare Part B deductible.
If you’re looking for a plan with cheaper monthly premiums than UnitedHealthcare® Plan G, you might want to consider UnitedHealthcare® Plan D. It’s relatively similar to Plan G but doesn’t cover Medicare Part B excess charges.
Can You Switch from UnitedHealthcare® Plan F to Another Medigap Plan?
You can switch from UnitedHealthcare® Plan F to another Medicare Supplement Insurance plan if you qualify for a guaranteed issue right. This is a situation where your insurer can’t deny you a Medigap policy even if you have a pre-existing condition.
In certain states, you can also switch Medigap policies at particular times of the year, even if you have health problems. Check out your state’s local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) or state insurance department to learn more about your state’s Medigap rules.

UnitedHealthcare® Plan F is an excellent plan that covers many medical costs Original Medicare doesn’t pay for. However, if you were eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, you won’t qualify for the plan.
