What Are Medigap Plans?

While Original Medicare (Part A and B) provides decent healthcare coverage, it doesn’t cover everything. As the name aptly suggests, Medigap Plans fill the gaps in Original Medicare coverage.

Also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance plans, Medigap plans are private insurance policies that work in conjunction with Original Medicare to help pay for deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and other out-of-pocket medical expenses. This can reduce the financial burden of medical costs and provide you with more comprehensive coverage.

What Medigap Plans Does Mutual of Omaha Offer?

Across most states, you’ll find ten standardized Medigap plans (A-D, F, G, and K-N). Mutual of Omaha offers all these plans, each with varying levels of coverage. Let’s explore each of these Mutual of Omaha Medigap Plans in detail.

Medigap Plan A

Medigap Plan A offers the most basic coverage. The plan covers basic Medicare expenses like hospital copayments and coinsurance. Besides these costs, the plan also covers blood transfusion for the first three pints of blood.

Medigap Plan B

Like Medigap Plan A, Plan A offers fairly similar coverage. However, unlike Plan A, it covers the Original Medicare Part A deductible.

Medigap Plan C

Medigap Plan C offers relatively broad coverage, covering everything in Plan B. In addition, the plan provides coverage for the following:

  • Part B deductible
  • Part B excess charge
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Foreign travel emergency coverage of up to 80%

However, while Plan C offers fairly comprehensive coverage, it isn’t available to everyone. If you first became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1 2020, you can’t enroll in Medigap Plan C. However, if you already had Plan C coverage before the phasing out of the plan, your coverage won’t change.

  • Medigap Plan D

    Medigap Plan D is pretty similar to Plan C. So if you aren’t eligible for Plan C and want a plan that offers similar coverage, you might want to consider it. However, remember that, unlike Plan C, Plan D doesn’t cover the Part B deductible.

    Medigap Plan F

    Medigap Plan F offers the broadest coverage of all the Medigap Plans. It covers everything in Plan C, including the Part B excess charge. However, like Plan C, it is no longer available to new Medicare enrollees.
    If you became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1 2020, you can’t sign up for the plan. However, if you already have an existing plan, don’t worry. Your coverage will remain the same if you continue to pay your monthly premium.

  • Medigap Plan G

    Medigap Plan G is somewhat similar to Plan F. So, if you don’t qualify for Plan G and want a plan that offers the most comprehensive coverage, it’s undoubtedly your best option. However, there is one notable difference between Plan G and F: Plan G doesn’t cover the Part B deductible.

    Other Medigap Plans
    We’ve explored the most popular Medigap plans. Besides these plans, some other plans include Medigap Plan K, L, M, and N, each offering varying levels of coverage.
    Medigap Plan K and L are quite similar, and both offer decent coverage, but they don’t cover foreign emergency travel costs. Meanwhile, Medigap Plan M and N are fairly similar but don’t cover the Part B deductible and excess charges.
